Shelly Shanks | Artistic Activist
Shelly Shanks

There are many diverse artists in Houston alone that take over our eye's attention. One artist in particular puts her motherly instincts to work from behind her canvas. Shelly Shanks is an artist dedicated to helping non-profit corporations and doesn't let anything kill her enthusiasm. She is most proud of the fact that she can overcome obstacles with a glass of wine in her hand, wearing a pair of Jimmy Choos and all while eating a lunch in a fancy restaurant. Where was her skirt! optimism born from?

Truth be told, most of Shelly's strength comes from a series of hard childhood episodes, which gave her tough skin and a strong backbone. She was raised by a single father and grew up surrounded by her brothers, which consequently molded her into the type of girl who would never wait by the phone for a call. Art became her safe harbor and an absolute escape from her youth.

Shelly is not only an artist, but a true activist within her community. In 2000, Shelly launched the organization Artists Breaking the Cycle, a local group of artists, musicians, and writers who work collaboratively with other community organizations on a variety of projects making the world a better place. In 2001, she was nominated by Child Advocates for the annual Peace Maker Award. Shelly also met Nobel Laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivelle along with interacting with 200 kids from Houston.

She is constantly involving herself in projects, collaborations and educating those less fortunate. She is known to have helped women who were being trafficked, and teaching them to paint to release their inner emotions. It is apparent that her true passion is helping others in desperate need. Her work has been featured in many awareness campaigns such as Education vs. Incarceration in Illinois, Coalition Against Human trafficking, Music For Life in Austin, Beloved Community, and many more.  She has rescued trafficked women from secret places, and helped them reshape their lives after their traumatic experiences.

Her utmost success is her four children, usually the subject of her artwork. What better inspiration than a mother's love? Check out her website www.shelleyshanks.com and discover the essence of the paintings she brings to life.
