Fringe Benefits From Big Expansion

The Houston Fringe Festival returns for a three-day weekend of new theater, films and fresh performances.
For its second year sponsored by the BooTown Theater Company, the festival has doubled in size. “We have over 20 pieces and that includes the short films, shorter puppet pieces and longer theatrical pieces. So there’s a lot of diversity in this year’s festival,” said Emily Hynds, BooTown artistic director.
A highlight this year will be the free Writers in the Schools storytime 3 p.m. Saturday at Demitasse Net Cafe. Hynds says the poetry and prose written by schoolchildren and performed by actors reflects a cultural diversity.
“There’s not enough in Houston to promote cultural art so I’m excited about that. And hopefully some of the students can come and see their works performed,” Hynds said. A portion of the profits will go to the WITS program.
