Houston Fringe Festival
I am a relatively new Houstonian. After growing up in a muchsmaller city, I am still getting used to the incredible diversity of arts, music and culture here. One of my favorite things about the city are its people. I have met more extraordinarily kind and generous folks in Houston than I can count now! Another one of my favorite things about the city is the richness of its vibrant arts scene. On any night of the week, there's something going on somewhere, and chances are that something involves some of the most innovative creative art, music, dance, film and theatre you'll find anywhere. And Houstonians have quite a heart for helping others. Many of the city's art showings, performances and festivals raise money for worthy charities and non-profits.
Case in point: the Houston Fringe Festival, entering its second year of events after a smashing success at its debut last year, features uber-talented performers and artists who are creating work at the cutting edge of their genres. Another thing about this festival? Proceeds are going to support the growth of new artistic endeavors and to Writers in the Schools, which pairs children with professional writers in classrooms, hospitals and community centers to help children learn how to express themselves through writing.
Of course, I'm still working on being able to feel like Houston is "home," but being proud of the people and creative community here is a big step toward getting there!
